Hurricane Preparation
Highland Beach Fire Rescue reminds all residents that hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and requires careful planning. As a barrier island community, Highland Beach is located in Evacuation Zone B for all hurricane categories.
Key Facts
The National Hurricane Center provides storm forecasts 72 hours in advance, with about 24-36 hours’
notice for a hurricane watch, and 18-24 hours for a hurricane warning.
Once an evacuation order is issued, the Town will temporarily discontinue essential services, including water, gas, electricity, and elevator service. The barrier island bridges will close, and no emergency services will be available in evacuated areas.
What Residents Should Do
- Prepare a family hurricane plan now. Include evacuation routes, housing arrangements, a communication plan, and pet care.
- Secure your property: boats, vehicles, furniture, and hurricane shutters.
- Stock hurricane supplies: food, water, medications, batteries, flashlights, and important documents.
- Register for CodeRED to receive emergency alerts: CodeRED Registration
- Register for Community Connect: Highland Beach Community Connect
- Special needs? Pre-register with Palm Beach County’s Special Care Unit if you or a loved one requires medical support during the storm: Palm Beach County Special Care Registration
Once the assessment is complete, residents will be allowed to return only after damage evaluations are finalized, utilities are restored, and buildings are deemed safe.
